France's best loved Desserts

It had to be chocolate! Of that I was fairly certain when I spotted the headline "The 40 Desserts the French like best" on the title of Gourmand Magazine at my local supermarket checkout. I would have betted on Mousse au Chocolat, but no, Fondants au Chocolat made No.1, relegating good old Mousse to No. 3! I really don't see the attraction of these little muffins with the molten chocolate heart, much preferrring solid classics like the Tarte au Pommes (No. 4), Crème brûlée (No. 7), Tarte au Citron (No.15) or a good old fashioned Clafoutis (No.18) but I guess we have to be thankful that "foreign intruders" like Banana Split and Brownies had to share a ranking at No. 21!  So tell me please: What is your best loved dessert?

  1. If you are talking French desserts it would have to be salted caramel macarons. Or is that macaroons? I could not get enough of them in Paris. But chocolate mousse comes in close. But these foundant au chocolates are lovely.

    1. I am with you - salted caramel macarons are my favorites, too, but did you try salted caramel ice cream? To die for - well, not really....

  2. Judging by the desserts that are offered in the French restaurants we have visited in Provence, I would think that Fondant au Chocolat would be number #, Crème Brûlée would be # 2 and Tarte au Citron would be #3 based upon how often they appear on dessert menus. It seems these three are on almost every menu. My favorite would have to be different flavors of Pot de Crème which I prefer to Mousse.

    1. The last mousse I tasted was real dark chocolate with fleur de sel - sinful!

  3. I could NEVER pick a favorite. I really want them all at all times! I also agree with Penny...the salted caramel macarons are wonderful and all the shops selling macarons were certainly pushing this flavor.

  4. Your post gave me a great idea Susan: how about a dessert party? Then you could really have your cake and eat it, too.

  5. Well, I am not a chocolate lover...but I have family who are. My son adores that molten cake. One thing I always loved in France was Ile Flotantte. Rarely do you find that on a menu in the US. Funny it didn't make the list. Is that because it's considered a nursery dessert? I love it.

  6. Für mich: Mousse au chocolat, irgenwas mit Salzbutter-Karamell und Zitronentarte, in dieser Reihenfolge :-) und wenn es auch international sein darf: das Walnuss-Süppchen vom French Laundry!

  7. Ile flottante and Paris-Brest! Of course, I like all deserts but the # 1 choice is puzzling! In summer, nothing beats a "tarte a l'abricot" or Berthillon ice cream walking the streets around Notre Dame.
